The San Donato Church was probably built in the 12th century, making it one of the oldest churches in Scarlino. The adjacent monastery was divided in the early 19th century, its parts to be used for different purposes. The church itself still contains several beautiful works of art.

History
The San Donato Church is one of the oldest churches in Scarlino. The church is mentioned in a document from 1188 and it is therefore assumed that it was built in the 12th century.
In the early 18th century, both the church and its convent were further expanded.
In 1906, religious orders were abolished. When this happened, the monastery was divided into several parts, with different functions.
Description
The San Donato Church is built in the Romanesque style. Its facade is characterized by a lunette and a rose window. The bell tower ends in pyramidal spire.
Interior Highlights
The tomb of Vanni and Emanuele Appiani was created by Andrea Guardi.
The so-called Volto Santo di Lucca is a panel depicting Christ during the crucifixion, between the Saints Rocco and Jerome.
