History and description

The San Pantalon Church probably originally dates back to the 9th century. At that time, in addition to San Pantaleone, it was also dedicated to Santa Giuliana.

In the 13th century the church was reconstructed, with a basilical floor plan with three naves. The façade was moved to the canal side.

The current version of the church was built between 1668 and 1704 by Francesco Comin. The façade of this church, whose orientation is rotated 90 degrees, was not completed.

A special feature of the San Pantalon Church is its ceiling. Here is the largest painting on canvas in the world, covering 440 m2. Gian Antonio Fumani painted this “Martyrdom and Glory of San Pantalon” in 1704.
