Volta degli Innocenti Florence

The elegant archway leading from the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata into the Via Colonna in Florence is called the Volta degli Innocenti. It was constructed in order to connect the two buildings of the Ospedale degli Innocenti.

The Volta degli Innocenti (“Archway of the Innocent”) was created in 1522.

In 1942, the building to the left of the archway (seen from the Piazza Santissima Annunziata) was purchased by the National Archaeological Museum. The entrance was subsequently moved to the side of the square. The building itself became part of the Palazzo Crocetta.

The vault is decorated with a double Medici-Lorraine coat of arms from the time of Ferdinand I and his wife Cristina of Lorraine.

The round decoration with the putti was the emblem of the hospital.

Location: Between Piazza Santissima Annunziata and Via Colonna. Opening hours and admission: The arch can be seen from outside.
