Santa Maria Novella Central Station Florence

The Central Station in Florence is called Santa Maria Novella. It is located in the center of the city, a short walk from major tourist attractions like the Duomo. Both the Ferrovie Statali and the new private railway company Italo use the central station of Florence.

The main train station Florence SMN is located in Piazza della Stazione – Florence. It is open from 06:00 to 24:00.

The railway station was opened in 1935. It has 19 tracks, of which the most central (5 to 16) are the longest. Florence‘s very first railway station dates back to 1848. This Stazione Leopolda provided a connection with Livorno. During the construction of this station it was considered necessary to build a second station. Construction of this Stazione Maria Antonia was started, which would eventually be finished a few months before the Leopolda one. This station was more or less located where today’s Santa Maria Novella is located. The Palazzina Reale next to the station, where the royal family used to stay when they were in Florence, was also built in 1935.

Public transport central station Florence

There are direct trains from all major Italian cities to Florence Central Station.

From the Amerigo Vespucci Airport there is a direct bus connection to Piazza della Stazione.

From the Galileo Galilei Airport of Pisa there is a direct bus connection. You can also first take the bus to Pisa station and then take a train to Florence.

There is a taxi rank in front of the station.

Facilities Santa Maria Novella Station

There is a Wi-Fi hotspot in the station.

There used to be a tourist office inside the Santa Maria Novella railway station. You can find the present office by taking the main exit, turning right and crossing the road. It is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am till 7 pm and on Sundays from 9am till 2 pm.

Luggage storage is open from 06:00 to 23:00 (tel. +39 0552352190).

The lost property office is not located on the station itself. The address is Via Circondaria, 19. Bus 23 from the station. Opening hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 2.30 p.m. to 4.40 p.m.

The toilets are located on the ground floor and are open from 06.00 to 23.00 hours.

There is a currency exchange office on the ground floor, run by the Banca di San Paolo (08.30 to 16.40 hours).

There is a supermarket in the hallway underneath the station.
